Sensitivity and moment analyses of head in variably saturated regimes

چکیده
A numerical approach for approximating statistical moments of hydraulic heads of variably saturated flows in multi-dimensional porous media is developed. The approximation relies on a first-order Taylor series expansion of a finite element flow model and an adjoint state numerical method for variably saturated flows to evaluate sensitivities. This approach can be employed to analyze uncertainties associated with predictions of head of steady-state or transient flows in variably saturated porous media, with any type of boundary and initial conditions. Limitations of stochastic analytical methods such as spectral/perturbation approaches and the time-consuming Monte Carlo simulation technique are thus alleviated. An example is given to demonstrate the utility of the approach and to investigate the temporal evolution of head variances in a variably saturated flow regime. Results show that the fluctuation of the water table can have significant impacts on the propagation of the head variance. q 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. All rights reserved.

Modeling of flow and transport processes in variably saturated porous media requires detailed knowledge of the soil hydraulic properties. The hydraulic properties to be determined by the inverse problem solution are the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity K(h) and the water retention curve θ(h). The inverse modeling approach assumes that both θ(h) and K(h) as well as transport parame...
متن کاملSelection of Intermodal Conductivity Averaging Scheme for Unsaturated Flow in Homogeneous Media
The nonlinear solvers in numerical solution of water flow in variably saturated soils are prone to convergence difficulties. Many aspects can give rise to such difficulties, like very dry initial conditions, a steep pressure gradient and great variation of hydraulic conductivity occur across the wetting front during the infiltration of water. So, the averaging method applied to compute hydraul...

An Improved ISM Equation of State for Polar Fluids
We developed an equation of state (EOS) by Ihm, Song, and Mason (ISM) for polar fluids. The model consists of four parameters, namely, the second virial coefficient, an effective van der Waals co-volume, a scaling factor, and the reduced dipole moment. The second virial coefficient is calculated from a correlation that uses the heat of vaporization, and the liquid density at the normal boiling ...
متن کاملMixed Nite Elements for the Solution of the Variably Saturated Ow Equation
In this work, we present a two-dimensional mixed-hybrid nite element model of variably saturated ow on unstructured triangular meshes. Velocities are approximated using lowest order Raviart-Thomas (RT 0) elements with piecewise constant pressure. The resulting nonlinear systems of algebraic equations are solved using Picard or Newton iterations. Theroretical superconvergence properties of the R...
